Yes, people definitely underestimate their capacity to support and help others. I think one reason is because they want to know exactly what's right to say or do. Perfection gets in the way.
Having gone through especially hard times earlier this year (including the loss of my dad and the burning of my city), I can confirm that the friends who said literally anything to me made me feel significantly more loved than those who didn’t. In fact, I’ve let a couple of friendships go over the fact that they said nothing during the entire 6 months since.
